Companies are advised to create a mobile version of their websites as more and more people are using gadgets like cell phones or tablets to search the internet. It is important to know that there are some elements of the normal website that must be tweaked when designing your mobile web design. It is not wise to exactly duplicate your original site as there are some functions that won’t work well for a smaller screen.

To help you out, here are a few tips that you should keep in mind in order to make a great functional mobile website design.

Make your Full Site available – Since your mobile site is a condensed version of your original site, it is inevitable that users will find some information lacking on the mobile version. Therefore, it is ideal to have a footer link to a Full Site so that users can still browse for more information.

Keep it simple – While it is vital to keep those creative juices flowing, it is best to keep in mind that your mobile website is shown on a smaller screen which means you have limited space. You don’t want your information cramped up as it would be a tedious task for users to search for information they are looking for. Having a simple design with little to no multimedia elements is ideal. Having pictures or flash videos incorporated to your mobile site will only slow down your page.

Have a consistent brand image – Your standard and mobile site will surely differ if placed side by side, but you should always be consistent with your brand image. Use the same color scheme, have your logo imbedded, and have the same layout feel for both of your websites. You don’t want your users to feel as if they browsing another site just because you tweaked your mobile site too much.

Recreate navigation – As mentioned, mobile or tablets have a smaller screen so it is harder to navigate the site if there are too many links. Recreate your navigation system by making larger tabs for selected categories. This way, users won’t have a hard time tapping those tiny links that are usually also hard to read. A user-friendly interface is one of the top elements that you should take note of because users who find your site complicated will most probably not visit your site again.

Resize images – While it is advisable to keep multimedia to a minimum, bare in mind that if you opt to add pictures, you must resize them to an appropriate dimension that will be suitable for a smaller screen. You don’t want to overpower your content with big images as this will slow down your site and will leave little space of important information.

Having these tips at the top of your mind can help jumpstart your mobile website design. A well-functioning mobile website is a great marketing strategy that can boost your company’s exposure that will eventually help you realize your company goals.
