Last week we discussed about what responsive web design is and how it is changing the future of web design and web development. Today, we’re just going to add a little more to the information we reeled off last week and get you more interesting insight into this exciting web design model.
If you go to a gadget store you can’t deny that quite a few number of gizmos these days vary in terms of screen resolution. If you’re a web developer you’d need to consider that aspect quite seriously when creating your designs. Your design must accommodate to each and every piece of device with unique screen resolution and the only way to do this is to create a “fluid design”.
Fluid grid is better than traditional liquid layout because the sizing of the web page is not per pixel just like the way most websites are designed previously. In effect, web developers aim to have their website adjust to the changing screen resolutions squeezing its texts and images as it is viewed in smaller screens and adjusting its actual size as it accommodates bigger screens.
In order to do this you must be able to perfectly calculate proportion values for each element and first by creating a high fidelity mockup using photoshop or other pixel based image editor. To apply percentage value to your target element identify the value of your target element and divide it by the value of the entire width of the site. Multiply it by 100 and you’ll get the result which can be applied to the target value itself.
Another worth noting is the CSS Media Queries that is supported by virtually all browsers in the World Wide Web. CSS Media Queries is a great tool to help gather information about visitors in your site and in turn use them to apply conditional CSS styles.
