Design Guidelines for Web Designers in 2012 Part 2

In the first installment of the two part series of Design Guidelines for Web Designers in 2012 we’ve talked about the many factors web designers have to consider to stay competitive in the industry. Many of the designers take these factors for granted that they find themselves outperformed by newer and more energetic web developers. So let’s continue reeling off these traits and see how you can apply them in your future work.

Benchmark designs

Checking to see if your work if its at par with the industry is not bad at all. By benchmarking your work, you’ll get to check if your work can compete neck and neck with your fellow designers and see if the designs you do meet the standard close to what others set for themselves.

If you are developing a website, ask yourself if the features you add in your service package is also something offered by providers elsewhere. If you think your offerings are the same as theirs or even more then you know where your business stands.

Don’t attempt to reinvent the wheel

Are you someone who constantly seek for challenges and change in the industry you’re in? It may be a good that you’re aggressive and you’re doubling your effort to bring innovation right into your own backyard but hey, slow down.

Put in mind that your goal and your effort to attain them should be in keeping with the standards in the industry and your client requirements. Never start from scratch when its not necessary at all.

Keep your pricing competitive

Charging too much and too low are both not advisable. Charge too much and you might be discouraging clients because of price, charge too low and you might be forcing your client to find someone else for they might suspect that you are a newbie or too cheap to settle for small fees. Both have advantage and disadvantages.

Strike a balance and make sure that what you charge is what your skill speaks about you as well as the successes you make in your industry.
